General characterization of lectins and  galactose specific lectins

Lectines are non-globulin albumen which can specifically recognize carbohydrate part of glycoconjugates and bind them reversible so that not to alter the known glycoside ligand. They are widely distributed in nature and play an important role in all vital processes of the cell - the cell adhesion, the signaling system, differentiation, membrane processes, and more. Therefore Lectin play a big role in the functioning of a living organism. They are great for use in medicine. In particular the galectines reveal their specific properties and are involved in inflammation and cancerous processes. Thus it is possible to use them as a target in the development of a new anti inflammation and antitumor therapy.
