Wine industry Waste and Pollution Prevention in the light of ISO 14001

Industry waste is among the most important sources of pollution, and Wine Industry is among them. Introdction of Environment Management System (EMS) in industry provides the planning, implementation, control and monitoring of sustainable waste management and reduction of negative impact on environment. ISO 14001 is the voluntary International Standard framework document providing the guidance to companies on introduction and implementation of ISO 14001. Despite the valuability of ISO 14001, very few companies in Georgia, as well as in number of EU countries are interested in gaining certication. The Objective of the presented research is to a) hightlight the potential benefits of ISO 14001. In particular the research aims: to define the types of waste produced at varios stages of Wine making process, b) to conduct the gap analysis and define the strengths and weakneses in Waste Management technologies introduced in Winery Companies c) to highlight the potential benefits of EMS and ISO 14001 for Wine companies and elaborate the recommendations on introduction of Interational Standards of EMS. The research have been carried out in Portugeuse wine company CAVES MESSIAS and Georgian Company TBILISKI VINNI POGREB. The results of the research demonstrates that a) Both companies produces the waste which seriously affects the environment b) The waste management technologies introduced in companies are not in line with Interational Standards c) Introdction of EMS and ISO 14001 is beneficial for the companies as it provides the framework for effective use of natural resources, prevention and reduction of pollution, bringing the social and economic benefits at the same time. The presented thesis work is prepared in Georgian language.
