Water Supply of Rioni River and Related Hydro-ecological Problems

Annotation:

Existence of modern civilization needs intensive use of water facilities. For this reason forms and extent of the anthropogenic influence on hydrological units are enormously increased. The Rioni is the main river Georgia. River basin includes a lot of reservoirs. The river is used for power supply, irrigation and water supply of the population, for technological cycle necessary for mineral resources extraction. Ecological condition of western Georgia highly depends on condition, mode and quality of water resources of Rioni River. There have been built a lot of hydro technical construction on the Rioni, operating of which importantly changed water flow, both qualitatively and quantitatively. It is important to reduce the amount of solid sediments in the river, which is mainly conditioned by the use of river water for agricultural purposes. There are discussed issues such as water resources of the river, reservoirs and hydropower stations operation issues, agricultural water balance there. The paper makes clear peculiarities of transportation of solid sediments and its relation with the Black Sea. Important place is given to changes of water flow and the influence of the Kvirila polluting it importantly. Study of the above mentioned issues is carrying out considering problems existing today.
